1 The Question

Does Ranking in Google Mean ChatGPT Will Recommend You?

As AI becomes part of how people choose businesses, a new question is emerging. It’s one most business owners haven’t thought to ask.

When someone skips Google and asks ChatGPT which dental clinic to use, which contractor to hire, which product to buy: which businesses actually show up?

Most business owners assume the answer is tied to their Google presence. If you rank in search, you probably appear in AI too. It’s a reasonable assumption.

We wanted to test it.

So we picked a real business, in a real competitive market, with real Google visibility. We ran it through the AI Visibility Checker. And we let the responses speak for themselves.

2 Step 1: Find a Business Already Winning in Google

We Started With a Real Google Search

We wanted the test to mean something. So we didn’t pick a random business. We searched Google for a real, competitive keyword:

“Dental Implants Miami”

We selected The Smile Mission because it already ranks prominently in Google’s search results for this keyword. It has visibility. It has a website. It’s the kind of business that, by every traditional SEO measure, is doing the right things.

The logic was simple. If anyone should be visible in AI, it should be a business already performing well in traditional search.

Our hypothesis going in: if Google trusts them, ChatGPT should recommend them too.

The Smile Mission ranks visibly for “dental implants Miami.” In Google, they’re winning. That’s why we picked them.
3 Step 2: Run the Scan

We Entered the Business Into the AI Visibility Checker

The setup takes less than a minute. We entered:

  • Business name
  • Business category
  • City
  • Website

The AI Visibility Checker then analyzed 15 recommendation-focused prompts designed around real consumer behavior. These weren’t made-up questions. They were the kinds of things people actually type into ChatGPT when they’re trying to choose a provider.

Questions like:

  • Best dental implants in Miami
  • Most trusted implant dentists near me
  • Compare dental implant providers in Miami
  • Highest rated implant clinics
  • Where should I book for dental implants

Now the investigation begins.

What We Expected to Find

Because The Smile Mission ranks well in Google, our expectation going in was straightforward. A business with that kind of search visibility should translate into AI recommendation visibility.

We expected to see frequent mentions in ChatGPT responses. We expected the website to appear in citations. We expected to see the business positioned competitively against other Miami dental implant providers.

What ChatGPT Actually Said

The scan collected 15 real ChatGPT responses to recommendation-focused questions about dental implants in Miami. Here’s what came back.

ChatGPT knew the business existed. It’s not that The Smile Mission is unknown. But knowing a business exists and consistently recommending it are two different things.

A business can be known. A business can rank. A business can still fail to become part of the recommendation ecosystem when AI generates answers for potential customers.

That distinction matters more than most business owners realize.

The Overview section shows business mention counts and website citation counts side by side. Both columns tell the same story.
6 Recommendation Leaders

The Businesses ChatGPT Preferred

While The Smile Mission appeared twice, other businesses appeared far more often. These are the names ChatGPT reached for when someone asked about dental implants in Miami.

Amores Dental 12 / 15
Dr. Implant Miami 10 / 15
Biscayne Dental 8 / 15
Pinecrest Smiles 7 / 15
The Smile Mission (subject) 2 / 15

The Smile Mission was present in the scan. It wasn’t invisible. But it was not leading. Not even close.

When someone asked ChatGPT for a recommendation, the businesses above were the ones it consistently reached for. Those are the names a potential patient sees. Those are the clinics that get the appointment.

7 The Actual Responses

This Is Where Things Become Real

The counts tell you what happened. The actual responses show you exactly how it happened.

Rather than estimates or scores, the report stores every response generated during the scan, word for word. You can read how ChatGPT described the Miami dental implant market. You can see which businesses it named, how it framed them, and what it said about choosing a provider.

You can see:

  • Who was recommended in each response
  • Which competitors appeared together
  • Which providers ChatGPT framed as trusted
  • Which names kept showing up across different prompt types

The evidence is there, prompt by prompt. Nothing is inferred. Nothing is estimated. It’s the actual text ChatGPT returned.

8 Domain Visibility

Why Were Competitors Winning?

We dug into the scan results to understand the gap.

One pattern emerged clearly. While competitors were being recommended by name, their websites were also appearing repeatedly throughout ChatGPT’s responses. The Smile Mission’s website was not.

This matters because AI systems don’t just recommend businesses from nowhere. They pull from sources. When a business’s website appears in the sources AI relies on to form an answer, that business is more likely to show up in the recommendation itself.

Recommendation visibility and website citation visibility are connected. The Smile Mission had one without the other.

9 Citation Sources

The Citation Ecosystem

AI systems don’t invent recommendations. They rely on sources: websites, directories, review platforms, and other online properties that appeared in the training data and in real-time retrieval.

This section of the report reveals which websites appeared repeatedly throughout the scan. Over time, these sources become part of the recommendation ecosystem for the topic. When AI goes to form an answer about dental implants in Miami, these are the places it draws from.

The businesses winning recommendations were also winning citations. That’s not a coincidence.

10 Observed Signals

The Signals Behind Recommendation Visibility

The report also tracks observable patterns among recommendation leaders, broken down by the type of prompt that triggered each appearance.

The businesses dominating recommendations showed stronger visibility across different question types:

  • Trust queries (“most trusted,” “best reviewed”)
  • Buying-intent queries (“where should I book,” “which clinic should I choose”)
  • Comparison queries (“compare providers,” “options for dental implants”)
  • Review-oriented prompts (“highest rated,” “most recommended”)

The goal isn’t just to see who wins. It’s to understand the prompt types where visibility exists and where it doesn’t. That breakdown is what makes the scan useful rather than just informative.

11 What We Learned
Google Visibility and AI Visibility
Are Not the Same Thing

The Smile Mission performs well in Google. It ranks for a competitive keyword in a competitive market. By every traditional measure, it’s doing the right things.

Yet ChatGPT only mentioned the business twice during the scan. Its website never appeared. Meanwhile, competitors dominated recommendation after recommendation.

The lesson is direct: a business can rank in Google and still be largely absent from the AI-generated recommendations that an increasing number of consumers rely on when choosing a provider.

These are two different channels. They don’t automatically mirror each other.

The only way to know which one describes your business is to run the scan.
